A set of five black ABS Kelhorns as well as a convoluted- bore body-part are shown.
From left to right: Greatbass in -C-, Bass in -F-, Tenor in -c-, Alto in -f-, Soprano in -c'-. Kelhorns, like all original Crumhorns, are true Nine-Note Instruments without any extension keys.
"Nine is Fine!" is a series of Susato Press Editions featuring music for nine-note instruments suitable for all capped reeds and gemshorns.
Kelhorns (Kelischek Horns) are Capped Double-Reed Instruments very similar to Crumhorns and Cornamusen of the Renaissance but with a significantly shorter overall length due to a convoluted, snake-like internal bore. The instruments are much easier to play because the finger holes are closer together and do not require an uncomfortable stretch. Even small hands can easily reach the tone holes on a bass Kelhorn! For good volume, a "bell" is carved into the end of each horn. Kelhorns are fitted with our long lasting and reliable Susato Reeds. The sound is "buzzy" and wonderfully flexible! (Like Gemshorns, all Crumhorns, Cornamusen and Kelhorns are nine-note instruments.)
