Susato Kelhorns: Affordable "Buzzies" of Rosewood or ABS
Kelhorns (Kelischek Horns) are very similar to Crumhorns and Cornamusen (capped reed instruments popular during the Renaissance) but have a significantly shorter overall length due to a convoluted snake-like internal bore. This makes the instruments much easier to play (and transport) because the finger holes are closer together and do not require an uncomfortable stretch. Even small hands can reach the tone holes on a Bass instrument!  For good volume, a "Bell" is carved into the end of each horn. They are fitted with our long lasting and reliable Susato Reeds. These new reeds are wonderfully responsive and require less air pressure. They are ready when you are for that next tune. The sound is wonderfully "Buzzy" and flexible!  Like Crumhorns, Kelhorns are 8' instruments, sounding an octave lower than same-named recorders, which are of the 4' family of instruments.

(For example: The pitch of a Soprano Crumhorn or Kelhorn is the same as on a Tenor recorder. A Tenor Kelhorn pitch is like a Great-Bass Recorder, a Bass Kelhorn like a Contra-Bass Recorder, etc.)

Internal bore and finished -F- Bass Kelhorn made of Rosewood shown above.

Check out our Media Gallery for video clips of George Kelischek demonstrating Kelhorns!

Kelhorns are now available in two versions: Rosewood, as shown on right, and Black ABS. The Rosewood versions have two extension keys fitted. Like Renaissance "Buzzies", our ABS models are true 9-note instruments without extension keys! Each Kelhorn comes with a long lasting Susato Reed, fingering chart and cloth bag. Hardcases as listed below. See also our new Susato Press Editions of nine-note music for Capped Reeds and Gemshorns named: Nine is Fine (listed below)

Susato Crumhorns

Crumhorns are capped-reed instruments of the Renaissance, They produce a unique, buzzing double-reed sound. Our Susato Crumhorns are made of brown colored ABS and fitted with two upper extension keys, a thumbrest and a long lasting Susato Reed. The fingering is the same as for recorders. In common with Gemshorns, the range is one octave and one note. During the Renaissance, Crumhorns did NOT have any upper extension keys. Which is the reason they are refered to as "Nine-Note Instruments". In our times, two upper extension keys are often mounted, extending the range to one octave and a half.

For Crumhorn and Kelhorn Music, see our new series of Susato Press Editions of nine-note music for Capped Reeds and Gemshorns, listed below. The series is called:  Nine is Fine

If you need a Bass to complete a quartet, we highly recommend the

Bass Kelhorn, as it is very easy to play and easier to transport as well.

On a Bass Kelhorn, even a small hand can comfortably reach the lowest toneholes!

(For a description and prices see the Susato Kelhorns listed above.)

Each reed is identified with

a number: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6.

Our new Susato Reeds can also be used with many other brands of capped reed instruments. It is necessary to ship such older instruments to us for fitting of a proper telescoping reed staple that matches our new reeds and for tuning adjustments as well. After that first time, replacement reeds can be ordered without sending the instrument to us.
